I have on of Dan's controllers and yes it does use a pot to vary the output
of the 555 for powerfeed mode.
The way I have Dan's controller hooked up is to the parallel port, but all
it is looking for is a TTL high or low on a direction pin and on the step
pin. I don't see why you would have any problem providing this from another
I/O source.
