I had the same thoughts. The main issue that I found was that a servo
system does not reach a point and stop but is constantly moving back a
forth around a set point. For that reason there needs to be no play or
backlash between the servo and the encoder or a constant dithering will
result. Depending on the amount of backlash, the strenght of the drive
and its speed this can result in violent vibrations. (Ask me how I
know)
