What works for me...... if you have a "crank" on the Z axis stepper, while the the machine is on (no program running though), I remove power to the Z stepper so it will turn freely, using a 1/8" acurate drill bit (or whatever you programmed the G00 above the material distance to be) I place it under the bit, so it just touches, actually you may hear a squeaking sound. Now you know the distance from you material to the bit, this is so acurate, I can cut right to the table! This also a good way if you have to change bits within a program. Just write code telling you machine to move in a good locate, stop the spindle, and pause, change bits, recalabrate and hit the go button.........don't forget to return the power to the stepper!

those round spark plug gap gages for non-critical work.
It is just a flat disk with a spiral ramp around the edge
and a circular scale in thousandths. I just get the tool
close then put the gage in the gap, rotate it around,
and MDI G92Zxxx where xxx is the gap reading.
