That's certainly a factor.

There's another one as well. In the days of the early computers, the
parallel port was a removable card. Now, it is built into the
motherboard, with no hope of replacement other than a new motherboard,
or adding a card and disabling the on board port.

Some have reported motherboard failures due to wiring errors or just
plain spikes in the CNC hardware (motor controllers, etc.).

That's why I built a parallel port isolation board for my system. I'm
using an old laptop to run it, and there's no hope of getting a
parallel port in that, should the current one go out.
