Advice sought: Proxxon MF70 ?

on 2003-07-23 13:45:43 UTC
Hi,

this is my first posting to the list. I would like to know what the list
opinion is on the Proxxon Micro Miller MF70 as an entry level miller/drill
with an eye on later cnc-izing it. I have hand-tested several Proxxon
units in a sales shop and the MF70 had the least backlash in the X,Y table
(and also in the Z axis screw but that has no counterweight and will need
'some' work I think). Yes, I am aware of some shop floor tricks (making
the machine that is to be sold most 'feel' best). I need to work in
plastic, wax, and occasionally plaster of paris (messy !) or soft
aluminium or copper, and all my parts will be small and need to be
precise.

The cnc/servo/electronic part is easy for me, I have the background, I
need advice on the mechanical side. Who has experience with this little
machine ? Opinions ? Anything against aluminium XY tables ? The maximum
travel for this machine is 134 x 46 x 70 mm (X, Y, Z), with a 100W cutter
motor and electronic speed control, dial graduations are 0.05 mm (and it
seems to stand by it as is now, excepting Z which has backlash and
uncompensated motor weight on a normal screw drive - it is easy to go down
and hard to go up).

thanks,

Peter
