RE: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Advice sought: Proxxon MF70 ?

Coincidentially I just bought a Proxxon MF70. I bought it for a
microcontroller company that wanted a small lightweight machine to take
to trade shows to demonstate a new servo systems that uses their chip.
I selected the proxoon because of it weight. When I received it I was
pleasantly surprised at the quality. I too am somewhat concerned over
the wear of the aluminum XY but I noticed the replacement price for the
XY table was ~$65.
I think it would be fine for wax/plastics and plaster but plaster is
pretty abrasive as I recall. I think it will also be fine for most of
the softer metals. I think it should be ideal for jewelers and posibly
engravers with the 20K spindle speeds..
I have taken the XY table apart and plan to make a new end plate so I
can mount a servo motor for direct drive. Gross overkill but I think
anyone seeing the little machine zip along would be impressed.
I plan to make the motor mount adapter plate in the next few days as
time permits and should have it running on my servo system by this time
next week. Check back then

Subject: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Advice sought: Proxxon MF70 ?
Hi,
this is my first posting to the list. I would like to know what the list
opinion is on the Proxxon Micro Miller MF70 as an entry level
miller/drill with an eye on later cnc-izing it. I have hand-tested
several Proxxon units in a sales shop and the MF70 had the least
backlash in the X,Y table (and also in the Z axis screw but that has no
counterweight and will need 'some' work I think). Yes, I am aware of
some shop floor tricks (making the machine that is to be sold most
'feel' best). I need to work in plastic, wax, and occasionally plaster
of paris (messy !) or soft aluminium or copper, and all my parts will be
small and need to be precise.
The cnc/servo/electronic part is easy for me, I have the background, I
need advice on the mechanical side. Who has experience with this little
machine ? Opinions ? Anything against aluminium XY tables ? The maximum
travel for this machine is 134 x 46 x 70 mm (X, Y, Z), with a 100W
cutter motor and electronic speed control, dial graduations are 0.05 mm
(and it seems to stand by it as is now, excepting Z which has backlash
and uncompensated motor weight on a normal screw drive - it is easy to
go down and hard to go up).
thanks,
Peter
