I am a Proxxon owner and have converted mine to CNC. I am VERY
pleased with the results and have milled foam, Delrin and PCB
materials in both 2D, and 3D modes. I have made small propeller
moulds and have almost finished making a digitizer probe. With the
1mm lead the resolution is obviously very good and the high speed
spindle is ideal for small cutters. I use carbide and they will last
forever cutting the materials I am.
Some details of my conversion which is much like Tim's can be seen at
www.indoor.flyer.co.uk/millingmachine.htm
I hope to update it soon. The conversion was very straight forward
and a friend has also done it will hand tools apart from the brass
adapter which I made for him.
The only thing I want to change is to add some thrust bearings to the
ends of the lead screws so they can be tensioned without creating too
much friction (at the moment it is just washers). At the moment I
can get the x axis down to 0.05mm back lash but sometimes it does
seem to bind so I loosen it off a little.
The Delrin(?) leadnuts are very good in terms of back lash and could
soon be replaced if needs be.
Cheers,
Graham
