I used a larger drill XY cross slide a long time ago. As I recall it had
5X7" travel. I took the slop out by first adding torrington needle thrus
bearings infront of the thrust collars. I took the slop of of the drive
nut by maching them for a better drive nut. As I recall I got it down to
around .005 backlash and that was due to the Y axis flexing in the drive
nut yoke.

x y vice on a drill press. It is being run by turbocnc by parker
drives. The steppers are 8 amp mae motors(overkill).

They are crappy videos. It is a 1/8 inch mill cutting circles in
piece of plastic. I probably have around .020 in backlash. This
was just an experiment to play with. It has about 5X3 inches of
travel. You might want to right click and download to your computer.
if not you might have to play the video twice in the player as it
might be choppy the first time.
