Kim,

Having the enclosure open like a car boot sounds like a good idea, why not
mount all the control stuff in some kind of rolling cart, that way the
operator could move it wherever was necessary.

Im not sure wether or not this machine is on its own stand but if it were me
I would remake a stand/enclosure unit and have the whole lathe mounted on a
slant to allow all chips to fall away from the lathe into a removable tray.

My mill enclosure is designed so that all coolant and chips happily fall
into a tray at the bottom of the enclosure, the coolant is filtered from the
chips and re-used and at the end of the day all I do is slide out the tray
and tip the chips in the bin... nice and tidy.
