DeskCNC has a $50 serial port controller. The intelligent
controller/breakout board produces step and direction for 4 axes and
works with most any S&D drivers(such as Xylotex or Gecko). It
requires a single off the shelf 9-pin serial cable to connect to the
computer.

The $150 DeskCNC controller/driver board (now limited to stock on
hand at dealers) is probably the simplist setup. It has all the
break out connections of the controller board, plus a built in power
supply. Add a 24 vac transformer, wire your motors, and make chips
(scratches in the case of engraving).
