When would I use such a technique, what are the tradeoffs and is it
somthing that is machine-dependent? I.e. would it be reasonable to try on
a Sherline CNC mill?
Plunge roughing works well for special applications and on light weight
equipment. Long tools is the most frequently used because the tool pressure is
vertical instead of side load. It can be used for finishing very precise slots
with a boring head and little step overs, I dont see much reason for it in
common hobby cad/cam programming like you said just use a drill cycle. The bad
part about plunge roughing I have found is it works best with a custom tool
that is designed just for it. Starting the cycle can be a (full dia bottom cut)
problem and chips building up in a deep narrow space. Most application its
faster to use conventional methods but there are times its great.
