Slotted nut is easy. Just take a standard nut and cut a slot all the way
through one wall about the width of a hacksaw blade. Now come up with a
way to squeeze the nut to close the gap in a manner that is adjustable.
Sort of looks like a collar clamp. On the Taig the nuts are larger
blocks and the adjustment is an allen screw that is perpendicular to the
screw and off to the side. Now you adjust the pressure pinching the nut
closed until you have little to no backlash, but still run freely.
You already have a split nut system right in front of you. Split nut is
on the X and Y of your mill. You have 2 nuts and some way to adjust one
into the other. Sherline's adoption is a little odd in that the body of
the machine is part of the system. If you have looked at any of the
pictures for a preloaded ballnut that is pretty much all you need. A
couple of methods come to mind. None should take more than an hour or so
to make if you use a pair of existing Z axis nuts.
