As far as home brew, you can single step a stepper with an H-Bridge
so that makes it a simple starting point.
The Linistepper is a possible home brew project.
I even think there are some schematics in the files section.
Once you find your chips, search the archives for discussions about
it. There are pretty many threads for each topic.
