Hi Wes,

yes to both questions.

there is most likly a driver chip in the fax machine that you can
use, but if it is like my HP laser, the chip uses a phase type pwm
signal so it is not as simple to use as the step and direction we
often talk about.

check for a chip with 20 or so pins, that is heatsunk, or is a larger
form factor. checking chips on digi-key or www.findchips.com or
something.

As far as home brew, you can single step a stepper with an H-Bridge
so that makes it a simple starting point.

The Linistepper is a possible home brew project.

I even think there are some schematics in the files section.

Once you find your chips, search the archives for discussions about
it. There are pretty many threads for each topic.
