I was hoping to use an internal stop, or possibly an external shoulder,
if the design allows it. Seeing as it's for 1/2" shanks and most of my
work is done with 3/32 and 1/8 shanks, I'd be making adapters. Perhaps
that might not work as good as ISO tooling, but it's got to be at least
as good as what I'm using now, a Sherline spindle with the thread-on
tool holders. (which will come loose once in a while unless you really
wrench on them)
I'm not too concerned with runout, if it'll handle big router bits at
20,000+ rpm, it's likely to be close enough for me. What does concern me
is that it will grip tight enough that larger end mills won't creep out.
Les mentioned a bad review in FWW, think I'll try to track that down.
Assuming it will hold well enough for -my- uses, I think there's some
decent potential, with the locking action, to build a mechanism to allow
automatic tool changes.
Went to the local woodworking store yesterday to look one over, (The
Tool Shed in Grass Valley) and the bozo tells me neither he, nor even
his rep can get them, Jacobs won't release for general sale. Oddly, he
tells me the local college woodshop has them. Found out from a friend,
this bastion of customer service always offers a similar story if what
you want isn't hanging on the wall in his place.
I'll try the college, really want to look at one before plunking down
$50. Oh, MSC carries it.
