Hello,
I wouldn't use the controller from your Griz mill...
The router speed control units from HF now being offered are MUCH
better than most. On sale, they are about 12 bucks; smooth control,
decent quality construction. Better than the 75 buck MLCS units
they've replaced...
As to trim routers for spindles, I've used two different PorterCable
trim routers, the 3310 and 56??, which is a 5.6A motor. Also the
hitachi trim router, the bosch (nice because it uses a "ring" mount)
which is easily adaptable to a CNC z axis. All have worked well, but
I like the PC 56?? and Bosch the best. Both are equivalent in
functionality to a 690 porter cable router, except for the larger
collet size offered by the 690. (I'm not saying they are the same
rating! I AM saying that in use, one can pretty much do what the
other can, on a daily basis. The trim routers are smaller and
lighter, so this is useful to know.)
A agree with Bob about the quiet of the Makita, and the newer Bosch
routers are almost as quiet. Many of us still use the "tried and
true" 7518 3-1/3hp PC router, as for years it has been the NOISY de
facto std. for low cost cnc router spindles. Putting better grade
bearings and doing some additional balancing is a worthwhile
endeavor, IMO. At least these have made a difference for me, noise
and life-wise.
Les Watts is a member of this group and is/was? involved in reducing
the noise of electrical tools...
Hope this helps,
Ballendo
