The data sheet clearly shows that the range of current settings stops at
3.5A/phase max. Add the 30% boost feature, you get near enough 4.5A/phase.
Multiply by 2 phases, you get 9A max.

There is an "overdrive" feature that compensates for reduced motor current
at high step rates and appears to adaptively increase the phase current in
those circumstances to a max of 6.3A/phase, but you don't get that at low
step rates.

Still looks like good value to me for driving medium-sized steppers.
