I want to thank everyone for their advice. It has been several months since I visited the web site that I most likely misunderstood. I have been unable to find it again. Anyway I thought it was to good to be true.
I am a retired machinist with some Nc and cnc experience though that was years ago. At the present time I would like to build a toy machine to play with and regain some cnc know how and to gain the ability to build my own machine.
I am presently building plywood boats and will eventually build a really big cnc router that could cut out whole sides and bottom panels maybe 18 ft. long. The machine will be built of oak with metal ways. I plan to use chain drives and a standard home type router for a cutting head.
The thickest plywood I will cut will be 1 inch. I don't expect to do this in one cut but probably several so cutting loads will be low. Speed will not be a factor as any cnc router will be much faster than the laying out and band sawing that I am presently doing.
I would think that + or - .050 would be plenty of accuracy as long as the machine will repeat the same shape so that multiple cuts will repeat within about .010 of each other.
If this turns out to be undoable I will build it 10 ft long and jig the plywood so that I can cut the hull pieces in sections.
I have access to a machine shop for building and am presently putting up a shed to house the machine.
I think that 2 axis would work fine but will build to add a third axis if needed.
Any and all advice is welcome keeping in mind that cost really is a factor.
Doug
