Chain drives can also be fixed end, with 2 idler sprockets, and one
driver...
This also has the advantage of getting the crosshaft "up" to give
clearance under the gantry.

P.S. I'd DEFINITELY use chain if I were making a CNC surfboard
shaper. It will handle the foam swarf better than the other
techniques.
