Hi,
Have a look at the OMRON EE-SY671. It is a reflective sensor with the
electronics, including a sensitivity adjustment and LED indicator built in.
It is as close as "plug and play" as you will get.
It requires +5V, GND and has a digital out signal that requires a pull-up
resistor. One of the good features is the distance it can be from the
pulley. If you look at the photo, you will see the gap is about 1/2".
I used a permanent marker pen to colour 1/2 of the pulley black. That way it
gives a 50% duty cycle wave form. I have to reapply the black about every 6
months due to it being rubbed off from handling the pulley.
I have a picture of one mounted on my Taig mill on the master 5 yahoo group
in the photos section in a folder called homann

ncoder.jpg&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/master5/lst%
3f%26.dir=/Homann%26.src=gr%26.view=t
I did a search and its about $19.00 from Mouser.

Hope this helps.
