As you may know, Sherline uses a reflective sensor for their DRO. The
part they use is available from DigiKey as QRD1114 at 94 cents each.
Sherline even has a molded holder for it to screw it to the pulley
guard, and I'll bet you can buy the whole assembly as a spare part.
But you will need to provide it with 5 volts and "pull up" the output.

I prefer to use a Hall effect (magnetic) sensor. I make a timing tool
that can also be used as a Sherline tachometer. You can see pictures
