Hi Bill;

Have you tried a fiber optic, "Y", connector? Send light from an LED down one
branch of the, "Y", and out the base. reflected light comes back up the base,
and can be detected with a photo transistor, or other light sensing device,
attached to the other branch of the, "Y". This was used as an audio sensor for
a blind man's cane, and can be tuned for sensitivity. A light/dark patch
painted onto a rotating shaft, could feed impulses to a frequency counter for a
Revolutions per second readout. All kinds of applications.
