Some beefy rack and pinion should work well. Unless you are making
wooden parts for the space shuttle, the backlash should be no problem.
With a spring loaded pinion, you should be able to keep it to a minimum.

A screw that long would certainly wobble, unless it was 2+ inch
diameter. You'd have to sell your house to buy one though, and you'd
need two. :-).
