Dear Sir:
In the business I used to own, we bought our rack from Standard Steel
Specialty Co. in Duncan, SC, Phone 803-486-9500. We used 14-1/2
degree racks for replacement, but 20 degree on new applications.
Sized used were 1/2 x 1/2 and 3/4 x 3/4. I checked the accuracy of
sample 6 foot pieces and found accuracy better than .005" over the 6
foot length. For our drive pinions, we had them made to our specs
and either through hardened or nitrided to around Rockwell 60C.
Boston Gear makes a variety of non-hardened pinions as does Browning
Gear.
If you need the smaller "instrument" type, Allied Devices, Baldwin,
NY, 516-223-9100 has good prices and quality. PIC Design and Berg
also make the instrument type pinions and racks.
