point me to a site or in simple terms explain the concept of
'Preloaded' with respect to
use of 2 pinions on 2 parallel shafts that engage the rack. These 2
shafts are driven by a 3rd parallel shaft running an idler gear
between them to keep the direction of rotation on each pinion correct.
One of the Drive pinions is special. It has a collar that is tight to
the driving shaft, but has an adjustment screw to slightly "crowd" the
mechanism when both gears are engaged.
I always thought I would try to sections of 1/2" wide rack side by
side. Then use two pinions side by side, and get one tightened on the
shaft slightly "crowded" to make it run tight on the rack. But then
again, I have not really had any backlash problems with new rack and
gears. When they are new, they really don't have much for slop.
