The knee may not be tight enough for proper movement without rocking.
If the knee bumps and thumps when you lower it, it is not suitable as a
CNC axis. Yes, the software would need to be modified for the different
movement/rev, is the motor could even lift the knee. HUH? No encoder
on the Y or Z? Is this a CNC machine or just a DRO and power feed?

Travel wheels? Do you mean Trav-a-Dials, or encoders that work by
rollers against the table, etc.?
