Having built one of these at work to keep some 8mm computer tape drives
clean, I can tell you it takes a lot of air to indirectly cool a small
heat load.
Of course, we have a pretty heavy-duty computer in the box we built, so it
dissipates more power than a standard PC. I tried to use a ring-style
auto air filter and a high-flow muffin fan, but the equipment overheated.
I finally switched it to a 1/20 Hp Dayton squirrel-cage blower, with a
squirrel cage about 4" diameter by 2" long, with a 2" outlet. This makes a
lot of noise, but it DOES move enough air to cool the computer. We get
about a 5 C temp rise over ambient air in the box. With the muffin fan,
we got 30+ C rise. Perhaps the auto air filter is too restrictive, and the
furnace filters will do better for you.
