Cable shielding - will this work for testing purposes?

Hi to all associated with this group. I am a long time lurker, so will
take this opportunity to thank everybody who contributes to this group.
Collectively you are allowing me to fulfill some long held dreams
that would otherwise probably be impossible.

I have purchased several used Teknic/WorldServo SSt-1500 servo drives
and need to hook them up to motors and serial port to test for
functionality and tuning. (Normal operation is step/dir). These
drives use Molex MiniFit connectors as used on ATX power supplies.
Of course, all relevant wiring diagrams show much shielding, twisting
of certain pairs of wires etc., but the cabling on ATX power supplies
is unshielded.

What I would like to know is can I use the wires and connectors from a
couple of dead ATX power supply I have lying about for testing these drives
before I shell out for good cable, connectors, pins, etc.? Cable length
can be kept to about 6" if this helps.

Otherwise, would surrounding the cables in some sort of conductive
material (aluminium foil/steel tube ??) and grounding this using short
lengths of wire held against the foil (or whatever) with cable ties
suffice?

Testing requires a PC and power supplies - the usual transformer, caps,
rectifier. No other sources of interference (I hope) are present.

Finally if anybody has used these drives I would be very interested in
their experiences with, and thoughts about, them.
