No, the major benefits of switching supplies is size and efficency.
They are great in electronic devices like computers and tv's. I don't
like them for machine control but some can work OK. They also tend to
generate more EMI than linear supplies but many folks may not care.
The things to look out for are peak output current and current
limiting. The peak current problem you have solved with a large
capacitor accross the output. The next question is can the power
supply charge it up to operating voltage. Supplies that have fold back
or linear curent limiting will be OK. Some shut off at over current
and will never supply any power because they can't charge the
capacitor to operating voltage.
