Well, I have done a complete 'about face' in my opinion of Linux's EMC.
My first foray was held up by a bad download. I have since downloaded version 2.18 and it couldn't have gone easier.
Within 5 minutes of installing the Linux BDI with EMC on the old Pentium 200, I had a simulator version of EMC running a sample called Tub Mold.ngc. The backplot shows exactly where the toolpath is at all times.
Linux is a little strange, all the commands are similar but just enough different to throw you the first time you do something. But it's not that much different from running TurboCNC in DOS.
I have yet to set up the driver, but it looks real good, so far.
I decided to go this route for the tool diameter compensation, but the backplot makes it worthwhile as well.
If you like TurboCNC, you will love EMC.

Pentium 200 is kinda slow, I use a K6-2 400Mhz and it works well. Avoid
