I understand everything except the "Y" part-is there an optical fiber "y"
available? or do you fabricate it?

You might try the optical fiber, "Y", connector route. Drill the
tinyest,
shallow hole you can make in the top of an LED. Insert a piece of viber
optic
cable into the hole, with a drop of clear glue on it, and hold it till
it takes
a set. Thats the transmitter side. Do the same with a photo
transister; Thats
your receiver side. Now whatever length of optical cable you connect to
the
bottom of the, "Y", can be routed anywhere you like, and used as both
transmit
and receive, simultaneously. Driving the LED with an astable, or PWM
oscillator will give some control over sensitivity. This was originally
used as
the sensor circuit in an audio object detector, with the detector end of
the
fiber optic cable mounted on the tip of a blind man's cane.
