Thats about it; Two relatively short pieces from the LED and the photo
transistor, or other opto detection device, to the, "upper" arms of the, "Y",
connector, and a third to wherever you want to detect something. If I recall,
the range is about 6-8 inches max, but I wouldn't expect great resolution at
that distance.

On another use, if you have a rotating shaft, and paint it white on one side,
and flat black on the other, you could send the output to a counter for a simple
RPM DRO. Depending on what components you use, you might want to feed it
through a level detector op amp as an input to the counter, just to clean up the
signal a bit.
