Dan:

I'm not arguing that the 5V needs to be connected-I agree.

What I am saying is that if the motor is getting commanded to move in one
direction, but not the other, that makes me think the step and 5V must be
hooked up, but the direction is not working for some reason-maybe a bad opto
on the input?

I have seen this many times before. Trust me the +5 from the PC must be
connected to the +5/ signal common if that is what the drive requires.
