Why not use a digitizing tablet? That's what we used in a medical
application (long time ago). It was a sonic digitizer, using long,
linear microphones along the X and Y axis, and a pen that sparked.

The arrival of the sound pulse after the spark was generated timed, and
gave the distance to the X and Y axis.

Modern digitizing pads use something like arrays of sense wires, and
pens or pads that generate an electromagnetic field.
