Thanks to all for advice and links.
I'm handy with woodwork (just finishing a 14ft pocket yacht!) so
I'll go for a plywood+epoxy frame because I have lots of offcuts.
I can buy silver steel (tool steel) offcuts for a beer money bribe
at local steel supplier - I'll get some 20mm (3/4in) and 12mm
(1/2in) and secure to a 2x2 frame + ply baseboard.
8 roller blade bearings - £10, screwed to 2x2 for linear X bearing
Stainless allthread - I have 12mm x 1m, another 2 will be £7 from
www.screwfix.com
Zero backlash nut - 2 stainless nuts clamped either side of 9mm ply
tighten one and seal both with epoxy. Zero cost. Got that tip from a
home made CNC pic at cnczone.
Steppers - 110oz 5v reclaimed are £19 each = £57 from
www.distel.co.uk
Controller board - £55 on ebay + postage
I will build a Y-Z carriage to slide on the linear bearings in
ply/epoxy. It should be dimensionally stable.
I have a small 600 watt router with 43mm mounting
Not sure about Y-Z bearings, probably roller bearings again.
Software - I work for a CAD/CAM company!
So far that adds up to £150/$255 - need a beer now for more planning!
What have I missed apart from a few weekends of work?
