Hi Keith,
If you want high speeds and are buying motors and drives I would
seriously recommend servos rather than steppers. Steppers are OK for
small jobs but not ideal for a big machine like a Bridgeport. I only
used steppers on mine because they were already fitted and I can't
justify the cost of changing the motors.
I can't understand why you are only getting 20IPM. My machine with
original steppers and Geckos at 75V will quite happily rapid at 100IPM.
Are you sure you aren't getting either noise problems or pulsing
problems from your computer? Have you tried another computer and/or
different software package e.g TurboCNC?
Try feeding the step pulses into a pair of headphones. You should hear a
smooth whistle that changes pitch as the speed changes. If you hear
clicks, buzzes or crackles in the whistle you have software pulsing
problems.
