In the way back when, it seemed to me that the grinder guys would take a
small part and place it on the table, then take strips of steel slightly
under thickness and block in the part. The bigger pieces would prevent the
small piece from sliding. There wasn't much danger from the part lifting,
but from squirting out from under the wheel an suddenly loosing contact
with the table and becoming air borne.

I never saw any of the mill guys use a magnetic chuck. I would think the
piece would grow a beard really quickly, and it would be thick enough to
jam a mill.
