Nate,
I'd wire the motors according to the "white papers" from Gecko's website. You need to know what type of motors you have. Unipolar or Bipolar. If they are the original stepper motors and have 6 wires they are probably Unipolar. If you have that much current available and you can turn it by hand while powered up I'd say the motors are wired wrong. This is a dumb question but, I'll ask it. They are steppers right? If they were DC servos they'd act that way on a stepper drive I would think??

I've almost got my Boss 5 retrofit finished. I reused old parts for
the power supply, gecko 201's and DeskCNC from Deskam. I wired the
motors according to the Home Shop Machinist articles earlier this
year. The problem is it won't go. There is a noticible difference
in turning a motor by hand when the unit is powered up or not. When
it is on the motor tries to hold its position, although it is very
weak and I can move it easily by hand. There is 80V DC to the
Gecko, and I know the Deskam controller board is working because it
can operate the spindle. Also the Gecko is staying very cool and I
thought it should get pretty hot. Don't worry, its mounted on a
bigol' heatsink with a high volume fan pointed at it. The only
possibility I can think of is that the software is set up for three
axes (setup has a minimum of two) and I wanted to hook them up one
at a time and drive it around a little to get comfortable before I
add another. Maybe it "sees" a missing motor and won't output to
the others because of this.
Thanks in advance
Nathan
