Nice mugging!
Note that there is a fuse on the motherboard (soldered in) that will blow if
you overload it. Older mboards share one fuse to power the keyboard and
mouse, later models have a fuse for each. These can be replaced but it's a
job.
Most P-III and later mboards have chemical fuses that reset after they cool.
IIRC most of these fuses are about 1 amp so they should handle all the
opto's in 3 - 4 Gekos and a few extras for spindle and coolant control as
well as the keyboard.
If you want to build a pendant based on an old keyboard encoder look for an
older one that has programable key (gateway and Norgate made them). They
usually have an 8032 or 8052 micro in them just trace out the keyboard
matrix before you rip the heart out.
