AC brushless motors

Explain this:
Why are AC brushless motors so expensive? Since they are much simpler
mechanically, no brushes, coils are simpler etc. I fail to see why these
things are so expensive. The whole idea behind AC Brushless was a
sophisticated controller with a very simple and cheap motor. Now, I can
build a AC brushless servo drive for less that $100, but would have to buy a
motor at $$$$, this does not make sense.

Does anyone have a link to cheap motors or a drawing/pic showing what these
motors look like on the inside? I would like to try my hand at building one.
