IR charges an arm and a leg for development kits, but
the IRAM series is an absolute steal, even the IRAMX16
is only $30 in single quantities. It's got all the
power devices and drivers on board, you just need pwm
and DC. If you were building a brushless controller
or VFD at home it would be questionable to use
anything else. We know you can handle the PWM, so you
don't need the controller chip and development kit.
Another alternative is the DSP boards from
www.newmicros.com -- they use the Motorola/Freescale
Semi chips that have 7 PWM channels and 1 or 2
quadrature encoder counters built in, enough to drive
two brushless motors if the software can be written to
do that. You can get a board and software for $130.
I'm aware of the PIC motor controllers, but haven't
looked into them. I believe they are being used in
the hobby RC brushless motor controllers. TI was my
first choice, but they refuse to sell development
software for a reasonable price, you really are
looking at $5k for a development setup there.
