My first option for any set-up is always the vise. It is rock stable and makes part changes quickly. If there is any way I can use the vise over anything else, I use it. If it be a round part, machine a set of jaws for the vise out of cold roll with cavities that fit solely for that part. If its a small part you can hold a mulitiple in the same jaw and machine them in a production manner. They could be made with two seperate types of cavities, one for machined end and one for the other. The depth of the cavity would remedy the stop problems.
The drawback with draw type collets and clamped position being critical is when tightened they draw the part further into the chuck. Making it nearly impossible to locate reliably.

bring it back on topic.
A manual way to locate your part would be to put your part into the
collet and jog your carrage to a spot and use that as a stop for the
part. then close the collet.
Another way is to use a grabber style part puller. These are full
CNC type devices that will pull a bar thru the machine for repetitive
cutting. These are mostly for multiple part cutting ie: production
of parts from bar stock.
That type of part grabber can push a part into the machine for
locating as well.
Anybody else have any automated or CNC approaches ?
