Hi One and All:
I am sorry to contact the group by just a reply but this is the
only way I have of getting to the group. ( I only receive some of
the messages-ex. no messages from Oct. 18 to Oct. 30, 04)
A couple of thinks I would like to let you folks know is that I
sure appricated the help the fellows gave me at the NAMES show and
later at the EMC meeting on trying to get our CNC machine going. It
had a bad encoder and through their help I was able to find a man
that lives near Detroit that does encoder repair. He was able to
repair our machines encoder with pieces from his old stock parts bin
and he saved us over $800.00. This fellow is a one man shop and he
has a lot of old & new stock for many types of encoders. He let me
see his test stand and he showed how he check each unit out. Nice
fellow. If you have a encoder problem I am sure that he would be
happy to help you out at a reasonable price. The problem he has is
that he does not have email so you have to call or fax him to try and
catch him. His name and info. is:
Willam Dwyer
Ph. - 734-728-0405
Fax - 734-728-0717
I enjoy reading the different messages I get and want to let you
folks know that I have read most of the message I have received this
year. ( All that I could find time to read) I am thinking of
purchasing a Pratt & Whitney NC controlled vertical mill and all the
information I have read in this group is a BIG HELP.
GOD'S BLESSINGS

Ron,
Seems like the the machine you mention has one thing in common with
Steve's and mine; the three have been apart and put back together
(incorrectly, I think).
I bet the proto trak you mention is also a Southwest Industries
product, like mine. I called them to get an idea about the machine and
the controls when I bought it, and an 'old timer' who was around in
the mid '80s answered some questions for me. The control was a 6502
processor el-primitivo, didn't even have a serial connection. Thats
when I decided to go with a Gecko 320 and DeskCNC setup.
SWI is on my to-call list as soon as I can get them on Monday, but I
bet I get a better answer here.

stationary there is a problem. The way mine is its just a cross block
consisting of two ballnuts and two ground ballscrews. All of the
backlash adjustment is taken up with shims behind the bearings on the
endplates. The b'port I ran with ballscrews manually was an old
machine that they had retrofitted with a Proto-trak control and then
removed it and put it on a new B'port. So, I quickly claimed the
manual with the new ballscrews thinking it would be better. I didnt
like it for manual machining at all. It never felt like i had real
good control of it through the handcranks. Spongy and if an endmill
grabbed the work it would actually push the table and feed the
ballscrew. The thing was downright dangerous. There was no backlash,
it was just spongy under load and not very responsive.
