There are a variety of breakout boards availalbe.

from the simple 25 pin db connector to 25 seperate screw terminals
(bare bones if you will )

to the even lessor board of a $9.00 radio shack db25 jumper board
that requires you to solder onto the board, but offers all the pins.

Then there are a couple mid level boards that are simple opto
isolated and little else, using the PC's power supply to the full
featured one Bob Cambell offers.

One thing I am seeing more of these days is an integrated driver and
breakout board. the 3 axis board from Xylotex and the 3 axis chopper
from HobbyCNC both offer a 25 pin db connector eleminating some of
the need for a full blown breakout board.

But, this will be a learing experiance in many ways for you
grasshopper.
