John,
To put it plain and simple, I have reached that time in life where I enjoy
doing stuff like that "when I want to" and if I did it for a "business",
that means deadlines etc and it would no longer be fun. To me, it is more
about the education value and pride of making all this stuff for one's
self. Anybody and plunk down $$$$ and buy one. If you make it, you know how
to fix it when (not if) something goes wrong! I'm happy and satisfied just
trying to help others achieve their goals by giving advice (hopefully all
good).
Besides, I like to "tinker" to much and the idea of a set plan is not in my
book anymore. I start out with a sketch and modify it along the way. For
instance, I am working on my "Portable optical home switch" now and things
get changed as I go along making parts. As for putting the DRO on the
lathe, see my web page, been there done that. Used the cable idea on the
bed and mounted an encoder on the back end of the cross slide.
