This could be me talking though it is Richard. A couple of additional
ideas; on my bridgeports, I never take off the vises. If the hole is such
that the vise will go over it, the only thing you need to worry about is
coolant and ships falling in. If you can grind around the hole to clean
metal, perhaps a sheetmetal patch along with devcon or silicone adhesive
would be enough to control coolant intrusion. If the table is structurally
sound, this "fix" would be adequate.

Another thing I have done on smaller mills is to make a tooling plate. I
took 3/4" mild steel plate and drilled and tapped an accurate 1" grid pattern
of 5/16"-18 holes. After this was done, I had the plate ground top and
bottom. After bolting and dialing in the plate to the table, I have a base
for any fixtures I need for production work. Note it is not common for
machine shops to have a surface grinder big enough to do this for a
bridgeport sized table. I found that heavy diesel engine repair shops have
head and deck grinders that will handle this size.
