And the only way you can double the voltage rating by series-connecting the
caps is if you can be sure they are EXACTLY IDENTICAL to each other. This is
very unlikely, and it means that the voltage will never be split equally
across them.

Yes, but you have to divide the capacitance by the number of caps you
put in series, so these will be effectively 7500 uF.
You have to use four caps to get the same effective capacitance with
double the voltage (two parallel strings of two each).
