Generally it is possible to get a couple of output bits out of a serial
port. I've done this on occasion. There are issues to deal with
including the fact that the handshaking lines are buffered and current
limited.
Note that you will be using the handshaking lines as opposed to the data
lines. Generally these are easy to toggle as need but methods vary
from OS to OS.
You still need to take into consideration all of the isolation
requirements. The Serial hardware will have some ESD protection built
in which can be helpful. You can not rely on this built in protection
at all for control circuits.
