Hi Dave,

If the current through the fuse is only just enough to blow it then it
usually just seperate. If the fuse blows due to a very high surge
current the wire tends to vaporize. To complicate the isse the supply
voltage makes a difference. Higher voltages are more likely to form an
arc which will vaporize the wire.
