I took it that there is no savings in trying to run only one axis
from a CNC machine and then rotate which motor is run, one at a time.

The zeroing problems would be a nightmare (unpowered motors can
freewheel) and the risk of blowing a drive is very high.

Since I think the stated goal was to CNC the machine, it is better to
spend a few extra bux and do it all.
