You can make the slave motor type very inexpensively. Go to a surplus/scrap place and you can find big 3 phase motors cheap because they are of little demand. Get the motor spinning and energize two legs with two 110volt legs and it will run. then the third leg of the motor generates the third leg of current to use. They are very simple. I think the commercial ones use a Capacitor that energizes the third leg and gets the motor spinning. A 3 phase motor will run on two phases but will not start themselves.

The static type are very inefficient if I remember correctly.
